The point of promotion is to convince people of the quality of the object promoted. Manipulating sales is basically called unfair competion, which is an infraction in my country and in the whole European Union.

I'm not familiar with that either, but I'm sure it's different. people buy cds, video games, books etc for $10-20 at least once a month while smartphones cost at least $300 and not many can afford getting a new one more than once a year. not to mention that it's not even iphones or blackberries, it's just selected models of samsung

You've got a skewed view.  Promotion to motivate the public to want to go buy your album, this is adding the album to a popular item to buy and counting it towards it sales.

Still, she will gain a fair amount of sales from give-aways. And we don't know the number of cell-phones shipped with BTW anyway. It might be 200k indeed. In any case, this is pathetically desperate.

I sort of agree with some people though, if Interscope was that confident that the album will sell they wouldn't have gone for all this in your face promotion. Props to them though, for this bold move.

It's the best pop album since Madonna's Ray Of Light, which was actually THIRTEEN YEARS AGO.

In all fairness though I don't understand why they have done this. The album will sell anyway, never mind all the promo she/her team have done. She cold have opened with huge numbers anyway and not have this over her head.

the cellphones aren't shipped with born this way, they just add the album to regular sales of those phones. and if what cookiepants said about even iphone not selling 200k in the whole country, those 3 models of samsung are probably doing less 10k at bestbuy alone
