Kanye is the Monster
I don't think they're biased. That's because those genres usually have more musical experiments on them, and less concern and restriction from the market at the same time.

His LOWEST Metascore is higher than most other stars' highest. His music is fantastic, but I also think his asshole attitude and enormous ego appeal to the sensibilities of hipster music writers.
94 - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
87 - College Dropout
85 - Late Registration
79 - Graduation
75 - 808s & Heartbreak

Kanye will be at a disadvantage with his next album, just because his latest album was so highly-rated. I don't imagine Kanye staying in the "non-commercial" lane with his next album.

Truth be told there's also sexism involved. Women in music just aren't taken as seriously. Even Adele and Taylor Swift can't crack 80.
A woman as brazen as Kanye would not be praised for it, even if her music was incredible.

I don't mind Taylor Swift not cracking 80 but Adele definitely deserved better.

I love MBDTF, but I'm not entirely sure why critics loved it so much more than his other albums. Following it up will be hard.
But Kanye is still at an advantage because I don't think the whole "build him up to tear him down" thing really applies anymore. His next album won't be as well-reviewed, but I still expect praise, since critics have always seemed to stand by him. The only thing truly capable of killing his career is Kanye himself.

I don't think they are good examples. Their music are good, but have some shortcomings.
I totally can see why Robyn, Amy Winehouse could pull a score over 80, but two girls above mentioned couldn't crack that.
However, I agree sometimes sexism involves.

But even 81 for Amy Winehouse, while great, is still weird to me.
Janelle Monae got a 91. I thought she deserved it, but it helps that she is a bit more ambitious with her music, fusing R&B, Pop, Hip Hop and some elements of Dance. I think in order for a female to get strong ratings, the album has to be more than just a dance-pop or soul album.

I use them as examples because they're often used as foils against the girls who make "cheap pop music."
Underground artists are different. Janelle can score high critically right now, but I'd bet any amount of money that the second she goes slightly commercial (if she ever does) she'll fare much worse.
Even Amy, with that acclaimed album, barely cracked 80.

I agree here.
You have to think about the reviewers, too. It's obvious that most critics are fans of indie music. Look at the top rated albums and tell me what genre or type of artist you see getting Universal Acclaim.

The ArchAndroid is really just every type of music you could think of mashed into one album. It really does have something for everyone.

Exactly. There's a reason why The Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, etc dominate on every "Greatest" list. Music journalism has always had a strong rock bias. White male rock bias, if we want to be specific.

I can understand why her albums don't get great scores but wow, they really trashed her
I would be surprised if BTW tops TFM because it doesn't really have the same "variety of sound" - part of the reason I loved TFM was because it was 8 really diverse tracks, but I manaed to love every single one of them.
With BTW, I feel like lots of the tracks merge into one another. I think she almost could've done with cutting some of the more generic tracks, 14 was just too many imo - it drags a little in the second half.
I would've discarded "Bad Kids" and "Highway Unicorn..."

BTW is good, but it could've been great if it only had 9 or 10 tracks.
