I don't know if y'all have already discussed this, but in that generally favorable NPR article on BTW, what the **** was with the last paragraph talking about race and how Gaga doesn't engage the black community?
Quote:
I don't always agree with Gaga's approach to sloganeering. I'm turned off by the biological determinism contained in the very phrase "Born This Way" and puzzled at Gaga's refusal to engage with African-American culture, either musically or within her calls for liberation. After the Twitter fight the soul singer India.Arie had with Gaga's fans last year, it's hard to hear the lyrically inane "I Am My Hair" as anything but a swipe at that singer — and, by extension (pun intended), a sign of insensitivity about black women's long-fought struggles against racist beauty standards. At 25, Gaga is still very much a work in progress. But then, so was Bob Dylan when he went to Washington at 23."

Like seriously, what the absolute ****? Since becoming successful, Gaga's released "Chillin" with Wale, she recorded special Poker Face vocals for Kid Cudi, was scheduled to go on tour with Kanye West before HE dropped, and last year released two songs with Beyonce (Telephone and Videophone), not to mention the fact that like half of her backup dancers and the people she surrounds herself with are black. How is that not engaging the black community musically?
And who knows how many underground black artists make up the Haus of Gaga? And like reading some completely bs racist slap in the face message into Hair?
That made me gag, like for real. They were trying so hard to throw in some negativity into the end of that article, just to contrast with the all praise they heaped onto her before, but those points in that paragraph are sickening. Multiple people on this thread should take 5 minutes to email them in disgust. Seriously.
Ok. I feel a little better after ranting on here...
