I don't think it's specific to any age group, older people can look at the song retrospectively on their life. While you may get to do what you want now, even though people rarely do, when you were a kid you more than likely felt like you had to be who your family wanted you to be. It can be taken as 'now I'm free' or 'I don't care what you say, I'm free', it depends on perspective.
If you ask me it's very Cyndi Lauper, think Girls Just Wanna Have fun but modern and obviously not as huge.
