LOL! "Deja Vu" and "Ring the Alarm" received lukewarm responses, and then Beyonce released a more poppy single ("Irreplaceable"). Beyonce is not immune to flopping and has had a few flops in her catalog.
Exactly. And the first two singles from IASF were very different as well - IAWAB and SL.
I mean, that's not a shame. Both songs smashed but she obviously is keen on having a safe option.
Really? those are my two favorite songs from her and their peak positions weren't that bad
Peaks are overrated and are never a true indication of how big a song is/was. "Deja Vu" went to #4 on the Hot 100 because of her first week downloads, and only spent two weeks in the top 10 and fell fast. "Ring the Alarm" debuted @ #12 and only peaked @ #11. Those songs were bigger on the R&B charts, but the pop charts were not having it. It's sad because "Deja Vu" and "Ring the Alarm" are among Beyonce's best singles.

erm ... Deja Vu and RTA is more urban and R&B appeal, so on pop it didn't do very well.
I don't like both song at all.

Excuses. Urban was still very successful on pop radio in 2006. But you just proved my point. Beyonce is flopping with a less poppy single, so expect her to release one soon.

Bey doesn't need to release a Pop song, she just needs to release a good one.
So, what if it's a "good Erykah Badu-type" single? Pop radio wouldn't play it. So while she has to release a good single, it would also have to possess some crossover qualities. Otherwise, this would be an upsetting era for her.
