In the end, it might have more in common "with left-field pop icons like Grace Jones and Yoko Ono than with arguable peers like Rihanna or Mariah Carey."

Hmm, if I'm Bey I would love to be put in the same category of Yoko Ono and Grace Jones rather than Rihanna or Mariah Carey. Not to shade those two, but Grace and Yoko are on two totally different levels.
The being said, I think this song will grow on everyone capable of admitting when they were wrong. Because I bought this song this morning, and was less than impressed by it. But now I'm listening to it again right now, and it sounds AMAZING. Yes, it's better than BTW/HIAM/S&M/E.T. and on par if not slightly better than "Judas." The beat is hot and Bey sounds fierce on the track. I love how out of left field this song is. I'm interested to see if this is the most "pop" track on the album and if she's going to push this sound even further on the track, which is possible if it's true she was inspired by
Fela! as much as she has said in interviews.
Oh, and the music video will do the same thing for this song as the video for SL did for that song. Remember that IWAB was the "pop" song and SL was the "urban" track and how after the video was released, Single Ladies smashed hard? Yeah, that's going to happen with this track too.
I think this song sounds like a mix of "Naughty Girl," "Diva," "Single Ladies," "Baby Boy" and "Ring the Alarm," all of Bey's best!
