The only reason I'm addressing this is because it seems like everyone in the world wants to claim that they're making new genres now (the worst case being Usher's "revolutionary pop"). The word "generic" just means that it belongs to an already existing large group of music. Considering she sampled a song that is classified as Electrohouse/Dancehall and worked with producers that make Electrohouse/Dancehall, I don't think it's surprising that the song sounds like an Electrohouse/Dancehall track, which makes it generic (as it is similar to songs within the Electrohouse/Dancehall world, having sampled one and been executed similarly) dance pop.

I think people misuse the word generic, and it doesn't really have a place in descriptions of music. All music that isn't experimental is, by definition, generic.

Electrohouse is one of my favorite genres of music and Diplo is one of my favorite producers. I don't see anything insulting or inflammatory in my comments.

I can agree with this. I just felt like the original post was specifically targeting Gaga for producing generic dance pop, so I was defending my position with that point of view in mind. Gaga's new music, from Born This Way and the few snippets we've heard is no more generic than Beyonce's. In fact, I was actually worried that both of them might be alienating their original fanbases, but we'll see.
