This song is not a Madonna rip-off. First of all, as far as the Madonna influences go, it does not just take from Express Yourself like everyone pretends. It is influenced by several Madonna songs. As the Rolling Stone review tries to address, this song is "steeped in decades of gay disco tradition" and to ignore that and attempt to reduce it to be a Madonna rip-off is to ignore the entire point of the song. It's sort of obvious at this point that when she went off to make this song, she wanted to draw from the past. The importance of this song lies in the roots of it. She took the production from sounds associated with an important and classical part of gay history, and combined that with the lyrics and melodies reminiscent of late 80s/early 90s empowerment music. Those roots ARE the song. But she didn't "rip-off" of anyone. She took all the different elements (many of which, such as the disco-heavy beat, pre-date Madonna's work) and combined them with her own very modern Electronic/intense twist.
It's just frustrating that people, especially people who claim to be fans of her work, can reduce that song to "a Madonna rip-off." Madonna may have made Express Yourself (which failed to hit #1), but saying this song is a rip-off of that is not only demeaning to Gaga, but also to years and years of musical development and human history that provide the foundation for the lyrics, sound and feel of this song.
