It's funny. There's no doubt that Government Hooker sounds ****ing amazing, but we still have not the slightest clue what Judas, Marry The Night and Edge of Glory sound like, three massive sure-to-be singles. Who knows what else she has hidden that we haven't heard anything about.

Not to mention the fact that The Girl is Mine peaked higher on the Hot 100 than Thriller. None of the singles sold very well. But, then again, that doesn't matter considering the album sold over 100 million.

I actually think that's a very good comparison, just to show how a lead single can be extremely distinct from the rest of the album stylistically. The same goes for "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" as the lead single from Bad.
I really don't doubt that BTW is very different from the rest of the album, I'll believe her.
I'm not, but that song is just about the furthest thing from groundbreaking pop there is. It's like boring adult contemporary, it'd give you a completely different impression of the album only being exposed to that.
That's why it's funny looking back in retrospect... they chose to lead off with THAT song.
