Britney Spears is certainly a part of pop culture. Anyone who looks at pop culture objectively can see that. Britney is not, however, legendary nor is she the 'Queen of Pop' in this mono-pop-royalty world. Princess? What's wrong with her having that title? Clearly she is.
I cannot at certain people calling Gaga a 'fad.' Britney could have been a fad, but obviously not. Hell, her current songs today are fads because they appear for 3 minutes and then leave. If Gaga were a fad, she would have started to descend from her original peak, not ascend.
But to be fair, Britney was ruled out over since she released ...Baby One More Time and 13 years later she's the Queen of all Music, so the same could happen to Gaga
Some of the arguments against Britney are just incredibly misinformed. Britney doesn't compare to Madonna, in a way no one ever will. She was first. She was the first female to take names, be successful, and breakdown doors. No one will do what she did again. So no one can compare. Not even the likes of Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey who also were incredibly notable and came out around the same time periods that she did that was known for huge album sales.
If you want to go that far Madonna will always be the Queen of Pop just because she came first. However that does not discount Britney's contribution to music, pop culture, and the industry in general.
Britney was Madonna for teens, and people have to realize that without Britney coming out as the first female teen pop artist none of their current faves would even be in the industry now. Not Ke$ha, not Katy, not Christina, not Rihanna, not Gaga, not any of these disney starlets, not any one of them. Why?
Because Britney brought back the faith record companies had in signing young female stars to their rosters. Before Britney who was there? Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. Both of which lasted less than 3 years as artists. Britney was the one who came back into the game and showed everyone that a young female teen artist could sell bucket loads. And that is what started all the labels trying to find their own "Britney" thus we got Christina, Jessica, Mandy, Hilary, Miley, and everyone else being pushed by their label as a Britney clone.
Not to mention that she is also directly influenced the trend of the anti-Britney's in the form of Vanessa Carlton, Avril, Michelle Branch, and an entire host of angry rocker chicks that ended up forming with P!nk, Evanescence, and the lot. None of them would have found prominence in this kind of music had bubble gum pop that Britney helped reach to the point o excess in order for a backlash to happen. So she directly had a hand in her own backlash.
Her impact on pop culture and the music industry is legendary. Her image is one that American Idol ended up replicating, and using for their female artists like that of Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson. Their marketing teams have directly used the young girl next doors image to help people relate to them in a direct way that Britney did when she first came onto the scene. so the entire marketing plan for them to establish their fanbases came from a Spearsian context. Taylor Swift even admitted to being inspired by her and her story, and she is basically another artist who falls underneath that trope. The impact on music just goes on and on.
Her performances, her music videos, her music, etc. All of it has influenced much of what came after when she hit it huge. It all ripples and spiral out from there to Britney's mammoth debut. She has had an impact that only Madonna could rival in terms of media, music, culture, etc. from the very beginning. Not even Gaga has had that kind of impact. And making up that she sold 75 million records won't change that.
You are either too naive or too dumb to even know what I'm referring too. You are delusional and smelly. Buh bye.
What the actual ****.
Only a true hater would picture Britney in a bad state, than her walking through the hallway dressed in her school girl outfit.
That gerl is sad, unfortunate and delusional of you to even try to not mention Britney as one of the definitions of pop music.
It's funny how after ALL the **** that girl's dragged herself through, making herself look like a total MESS..
She's still one of the biggest household names of the industry.

Chile.... BS is exactly that BS. She ain't nothing more than what a couple of **** and hags make her out to be. When people discuss Pop music, Britney is not mentioned. Britney is what is wrong with the music industry because they took this country pageant girl with no talent and transformed her into a runaway success.... she is the blueprint for Rihanna, Katy Perry, Avril Lavigne, Hilary Duff and the other Disney girls. As far as Pop CULTURE then yes Britney could be called the Queen since she stay in a tabloid. But lets never confuse quality music with anything Britney releases because thats just idiotic.
Madonna was never known for her voice but she always was one step ahead in the US at least with her music. The only exception is when she tried to do R&B and Hip-Hop because it was the "in" thing to do (Bedtimes Stories & Hard Candy). Otherwise her music was never groundbreaking since Europe has been doing dance music before her and she came in the game doing the sugary Pop mess that Debbie Gibson and Tiffany was known for. Madonna is a controversial performer and thats where she made her biggest impact and mark. She was the Queen of Pop Culture for at least 20 years. She has sizeable talent and can easily do a world tour and every date be sold out. Madge is more of a Queen in that sense than Britney will ever be.
It's not really a fail. When you talk about pop music as in what is hot at the moment, yes she is mentionned and that's when you speak with people aroung your age and with really fond of pop!
But when I'm with my friends and speak pop music, they are not like us, knowing all billboard facts, reading articles on impact and such. So no they don't think about her, nor do they think about all of our faves here
The same goes when you talk to older people. They talk about Michael, Prince, Elton, Madge(a little), Robin Williams but singers like Kylie, brit and the others are never or rarely mention.

I've never implied that Britney Spears "took" the title from Madonna. It's just a natural progression. That's just the way it is. Britney is relevant. Britney has been in the business for over a decade. And Britney is still delivering number one hits. Britney Spears is the Queen of Pop. I don't see how that's hard to understand or even debatable. And like I've already mentioned, that does not diminish Madonna or what she has done. "...Baby One More Time" changed the music industry, and that was revolutionary, P. Britney Spears was the sole cause of the resurgence of pop when the music industry was strictly Hip Hop & R&B at the time. Deal. I see your argument of, "Everyone has a shtick when they start out." However, that shtick does not define the artist. Lady Gaga has "become" Lady Gaga. That's not a good sign for her music and her persona will wear thin with the public rather quickly, but of course, before it does, I'm sure she'll do another "outrageous" scene at an awards show to soak up some more juice from the media. That's Lady Gaga's game. And that's fine... for now. Her longevity is questionable, and, again, like I've already mentioned, because Lady Gaga is the "hot item" right now with a couple hits under her belt, does not make her The Queen of anything -- just a hot artist. I stick by my original statement, if she's still flourishing in 6 years, then I'll reassess my feelings towards her. But now, she's just another hot sprocket making its way through the machine that is the music industry.
...Vin
But this is the distinction I don't get. If it's not about who is "reigning" now but whoever has proven themselves through longevity I don't see any measure whereby Britney should be considered the Queen of Pop rather than Madonna. There's someone who's most relevant at the moment and someone who has proven themselves to be THE most relevant over the course of a longer and more storied career, and Britney is neither.
And Britney was absolutely not the sole cause of pop music's resurgence. Pop acts like the Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, and NSync were seeing phenomenal success before she came along. She did kick off a wave of imitators, but neither she nor BOMT can get credit for starting the pop music resurgence.
And I disagree that other artists' schticks haven't in large part defined their perception in the public eye. To this day Madonna is still remembered for how overtly sexual she was and her shocking antics that frequently had to do with religion. At the same time, her music was good, so the larger-than-life persona provided a means through which her music would become more likely to still be played on radio stations today.
If you can't make the distinction between a new artist with a couple "hits" under their belt (which could just as well describe someone like Taoi Cruz) and an artist who has amassed a very large fanbase (aren't they the only ones who like BTW and have kept it on top for six week?) in such a short period of time, then I dunno. All I'll say is if you're planning on Gaga to fall off the face of the earth any time soon, I wouldn't be holding my breath. I'm just surprised because you'd think Britney fans would know this better than anyone else.
Not even Gaga has had that kind of impact. And making up that she sold 75 million records won't change that.
Excuse me? She's sold 16.5m albums and had sold 51m singles worldwide as of last summer. It might not be quite 75m, but it's probably closer to that than 70m at this point. So have a seat, chickie.
THIS!!! IMO u have to have some kind of talent and star quality to be considered a queen or king and while Britney was a good dancer back her day that was about it. She def had start quality but she def lacks in actual talent esp when u take away the dancing. She will forever be only a princess to me cuz of that.

I see your point. For me, I see Madonna -- Britney -- Gaga. But that's me and my generation.
I'm not going to sit here and praise Gaga as the Queen of Pop because that's arguable.
But in stages (and Gaga is yet to finish this era), that's who I see.
