Here's an example...
Grenade was originally released as a countdown single on iTunes for Bruno Mars' album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans, then later it was released as an official single after "Just the Way You Are."
An iTunes countdown only serves to get some of the music from the album out before the album's release to get people more excited about it. Additionally, each purchased countdown single subtracts from the cost of the entire album upon release, so they usually get people to buy the album based on the lowered price they see after getting all the countdown singles.
