Gaga lives for gimmicks, no doubt. Fortunately, save for Beyonce (in certain areas only), she's more talented than all her contemporaries so it balances out.

The dress aswell as her relationship with P. Diddy (and well, pretty much all her relationships after that) is what turned her into a tabloid regular but 'Selena', 'Out Of Sight' and the success of her debut album is what really made her a star IMO.

Gaga had Just Dance and Poker Face that went #1 but she wasnt a star yet. Her VMA paparazzi performance and Bad Romance video made her one, and both were full of gimmicks and thats ok. Every artist has a gimmick, nothing wrong with it. It differentiates each artist from the other.

I'm not saying this to discredit her - Gaga wouldn't be half of where she is if not for her head-turning fashion which makes fans and haters alike want to look. But I was 11, I didn't watch the Grammys, and I still remember how the world talked about that dress. My teacher talked about it the next day. I remember the headlines.
