GaGa's the only global popstar that I like. I'm a big fan of Rihanna at times, and then sometimes I'm less favourable as I'm sure you're aware. Katy and Ke$ha make catchy music but I couldn't care less about them to be honest.

I can understand people calling the lyrics cheesy forced, or contrived. It makes perfect sense. But exactly what type of person is going to be genuinely pissed off by these lyrics?

As I've always said, for me when their music stops, so do they.

I've always liked Rihanna, only liked IKAG from Katy, and hated Ke$ha from the start.

The funny thing is, Gaga plans to "liberate" people, but she was doing just that. The sheer force of her personality, talent and catchy music already made millions feel liberated by her. She doesn't actually need to sing "If you're gay, it's okay, you were born this way."
|
This is so well put.
Sometimes (most of the time?), the most inspirational songs don't scream "look at me, be inspired! you're awesome! woohooo." She made a huge mistake going the route she did. She could have done something so entirely different with this song and it would have been hugely inspirational. Tell the story of a gay man or woman - like literally write out their story with your song lyrics. That would be so ****ing inspirational compared to the lyrics we got yesterday, and it would be just as daring.
I'm gay and I'm not here for "you were born this way, love yourself, accept yourself" ******** in songs. I already knew how to love myself and that I was born this way before I read these lyrics. I didn't suddenly have an epiphany because of the song.

My words can't always be interpreted literally buddy. What I was trying to say is she is known for causing controversy, and it seems like this was intended through the lyrics.

Do you know how to just dance? Do you realize you're gonna be ok? Do you take so much umbrage toward all lyrical suggestions of which you're fully capable?
Of all the criticisms to be made of the lyrics this particular one doesn't seem very compelling.

Perhaps it isn't compelling.
But my point is that this song was meant to be inspirational and I'm not seeing/feeling the inspiration. I'm not saying my personal feelings are the standard for lyric quality either. I honestly just don't see how this is inspiring. I agree with everyone who says it seems very contrived and forced.
Is that more compelling?

I have to say, that is an excellent song concept, and I would be more instantly drawn to that approach without a doubt...
But what bothers me about the criticism is that people are ignoring the fact that Gaga is just a human being. She may be a great song writer, but that in no way implies that every song she writes will be the best it could have been independent of the writer. There will always be someone who can suggest somethin much better.
The fact is she wrote this song in this way for a genuine reason. I can't fault her for that.

She has me so amped this era.
I just hope her promo is on target. Her singles usually
overlap each other. And Gaga stans dont know how to push one
singe. They will drop it in a heartbeat and move on to the next one.

Either way, if she writes with the message being too subtle or the message being too upfront she was going to piss people off. If she didnt write it with an in your face kind of message it would just look like she is following the footsteps of WAWWA, Fireworks, RYG etc.
I dont think the lyrics are the best in the world, but we have yet to hear the song so I dont think we can judge it as a huge mistake yet. Gaga writes all of her songs and isnt accepting offers for songs from 40 different song writers that have been trying to make a superstar hit for months. She writes all of her songs so of course there are going to be some hits and misses that not everyone likes. Im sure if a person doesnt like BTW they will listen to the album and at least find more than a few tracks that they can ***** out.

Be real, no song is going to be inspiring to everybody. She could have easily utilized your concept only to receive bashes from people saying "Why the hell is she telling the story of some gay kid, i can't relate" Damned if you do, Damned if you don't

That's fine. Most of the time when people set out to be "inspiring" the message tends to be pretty rote. There's nothing new under the sun.
I think the idea of a "Ballad of the Downtrodden Gay Person" would be even more treacly, though.

I should write for the bitch, she'd get massive critical acclaim for her lyrics
True. It's frustrating though when you are told that this is her best work ever and then you see these lyrics. Hardly her best work at all. I am only judging the song because it is the only thing we have of this album. I'll judge the rest of the album accordingly.
Agreed. Her intentions are genuine, in my opinion. Seeing how ****** this song is confirms to me that she wrote for her fans, especially the references to paws and bullying/teasing. I think if she wrote this song for herself, it would have been written differently. I can't fault her intention but I can fault her delivery. The delivery is very questionable and cheesy.

Who said it had to be a ballad? Or that it had to be downtrodden?
It depends how you approach it. My two exampes of songs that are inspirational without the lyrics being blatantly cheesy and motivating: Papa Don't Preach by Madonna and Cool by Gwen Stefani. Both tell stories, neither are cheesy. The lyrics are solid and the story told is compelling and moving in each of them. In Papa Don't Preach, the voice is assertive yet there are hints of fragility. I wouldn't have minded something similar for a BTW type song.
