They seem to work to me. Her mother is telling her to proud of who she is and then gaga is telling us no matter what we are or look like we should love and embrace ourselves as well. It's almost like the message the lesser gurls were trying to spread when they got caught up in the trend except this one was written by gaga for her fans and wasnt done to be trendy.

I agree with you. The melody could either make or break the song.

The only parts I like:

It doesn't matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M. [it kind of starts off the song by opening it as, this is for you whether you're religious or not, so interpret the God part as you will]

I kind of like the mother part. It's cheesy but that comes with the turf when you're doing an inspirational anthem. It puts an image in my mind and I like that she's telling a story.

The part about the subway kids is cool, it connotes an image of NYC kids who get around to their clubs and bars via subway, and it stands for her too.

The rest don't do it for me

This part is the only part that makes me feel iffy, only because something just doesn't flow. It is a little uninspiring too, but I think the melody will change my mind.

Other than that I don't see how these lyrics are worse than anything else she's done. A song about loving yourself and embracing who you are is bound to have the cheese factor
