1) Mariah had the continual support of other formats even back in the 90s. She had Pop, Hot AC, and Rhythmic spinning her songs. Britney mostly has Pop support alone.
2) Jive never would release physical singles for people to buy for Britney's songs. Most of them just charted from airplay alone. That strategy paid off because people bought the album since the single wasn't available.
3) Nowadays, Mariah is only a singles artist.
