She's not as consistent as some of the "novelty acts". GaGa had seven consecutive top tens singles. All of them outsold Britney's last #1 single, 3. To sell 5 million singles one must appeal to the mass public, not just their own fanbase.

HIAM has general public appeal though. It's pretty generic but it's not like the general public is so discriminating when it comes to music - in fact generic is the best way to reach them.

At the end of the day, she still scores her #1 multi-platinum singles, breaks the correspondent record, it helps her album and tour sales, etc. She's doing just fine.

It's the best way to appeal to them instantaneously but if a song is too generic then there's a stronger possibility that it will underperform. We R Who We R did well for example, but it didn't do as well as people expected. It was widely regarded as an updated version of Tik Tok, and although both songs peaked at #1 Tik Tok occupied the position longer and sold much more copies. Cannibal's sales were also underwhelming because of that, being generic is not a good thing.

Gaga has performed her first singles on every talk/award show in US.
"3" didn't get any performance. Womanizer got 1 US performance.
Considering that her sales are brilliant.

WRWWR was cute for a couple weeks, but after that to me it became more tired than an asthmatic running a marathon.
 the rest of the album. It was a big step back for her overall.

We're talking about 2/3 of the trinity being on one track with "Telephone." Of course the song would sell, you have two huge fanbases buying the same single, if it didn't sale I would be concerned about the two. Also, Gaga had done some small promo for Telephone overseas, but not in the US.
