The last time we saw Britney Spears, her ‘Circus’ world tour was coming to an end in Australia. The mammoth live jaunt had spanned nine months, three continents and 97 shows, bringing in over £80 million. But perhaps more importantly, it had also sealed the tabloid-battered singer’s pop redemption.
Little of note has been heard from the US singer since that last show in Adelaide in November 2009, save for official confirmation that her global stardom was back on track. Six months ago, Forbes produced their annual ‘Celebrity 100’ rundown, which listed Britney at six, placed between U2 and Tiger Woods.
With estimated earnings of over £40 million and headline-grabbing figures across media platforms, this seemed like a pretty good place to be. Or did it? Because not only did the poll confirm she was, in fact, now only the third most powerful pop star on the planet but it also highlighted a surely more significant trend.
Two places behind runner-up Beyoncé at number four was Lady Gaga. Way down the list at ten was Madonna, further confirming that the music landscape she and Britney once dominated had changed forever. There is a new kid in town, a development strengthened in the weeks and months since.
With the momentum of three years of solid touring behind her alongside the staggering success of debut album ‘The Fame’, Gaga is now the world’s premier chart star and she will look to cement that position in 2011 with imminent new album ‘Born This Way’. But where does this leave Britney?
News emerged last week of a new single, ‘Hold It Against Me’, and the demo soon followed. “If u think that's good, wait ‘til you hear the real one Tuesday,” tweeted Britney ahead of today’s official unveiling of the first track from her as-yet-untitled seventh studio album, which you can LISTEN TO HERE.
With the hype machine in full flow and Spears hoping to steal a march on her formidable chart rival’s comeback, anticipation has reached fever pitch. What can she do to remain relevant and perhaps win back her pop crown? The answer is a bold, dynamic song that takes risks and will hope to be rewarded.
Ahead of her new material, long-time collaborators Max Martin and Dr. Luke made their intentions clear. The latter said he wanted her sound to “get harder” and take it “a little more deep into electronic - grimier.” ‘Hold It Against Me’ was leaked yesterday and the initial response suggests they have been successful.
Although Spears has long since found her feet on the dancefloor, this song is a particularly thumping club banger, all frazzled, uber-fashionable Eurodance synths, complete with a hectic, Dubstep-inspired mid-section, which is sure to get the critics onside. Happily, a memorable chorus has also been bolted into place.
In fact, lyric-wise, we’re in familiar territory. “If I said my heart was beating loud, If we could escape the crowds somehow, If I said I wanted your body now, would you hold it against me,” she moans in what is a promising return. But is it enough?

This clearly sets the standard for what an international smash should be. If you can't get that № 1 in more than 15 iTunes stores, then you might as well give up.

BIllobard article for HIAM Dominance on radio
Quote:
After just one day, Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" already ranks as the No. 16 most-played track at pop radio, according to Nielsen BDS
The first single from Spears' forthcoming ninth album ranks at No. 16 in plays - and No. 7 in audience - on Billboard's Pop Songs building chart, to be released on Billboard.com next Monday (Jan. 17).
The survey lists the most played songs on 130 mainstream top 40 radio stations, as monitored by BDS.
"Hold It Against Me" logged 595 plays yesterday (Jan. 10) on 114 of the chart's reporting stations, or 88% of the panel. The song's first-day airplay translates to 7.8 million in audience.
KIIS (102.7)/Los Angeles and KHTS (Channel 933)/San Diego led all pop reporters with 18 first-day plays each.
Mainstream top 40 programmers report that early listener reaction to the song has been overwhelmingly positive.
"It's another home run for Britney," says Sharon Dastur, program director of WHTZ (Z100)/New York, which spun "Hold It Against Me" eight times yesterday. "The tweets, texts and Facebook posts are overflowing with listeners that are excited that Britney is back with another smash."
"Instant listener reaction in Miami has been massive," says WHYI (Y100)/Miami PD Alex Tear. "We are already playing the song in heavy rotation, in addition to offering instant access to hear it on Y100.com. It sounds great on the radio.
"Welcome back, Brit."
"With all those pickup lines in the song, how can it not get 'picked up' to play on the radio?," muses John Reynolds, WNKS (Kiss 95.1)/Charlotte, N.C., PD. "It's another Spears hit."
KSLZ (107.7 FM)/St. Louis PD Jeff McHugh says that Spears, who, with the song's debut on Pop Songs, will up her count to 25 chart entries, a sum bested only by Mariah Carey (29) and Madonna (26) in the chart's 18-year history, simply continues to give her fans what they want.
"'Hold It Against Me' is what Britney does best: provocative lyrics and ass-shaking pop."

All remixes and all future Britney singles should begin AND end with "It's Britney, Bitch."

The track's balance between club-ready verses and a soaring pop chorus (which melodically recalls the verse from Dido's "Thank You" sampled in Eminem's "Stan") is more reminiscent of the Black Eyed Peas' recent hits than anything in Brit's formidable singles catalog. While lyrics like, "If I want your body now/Would you hold it against me?" don't earn points for originality, "Hold It Against Me" is a winner and a tantalizing teaser of Spears' forthcoming, still-untitled album, due in March.
