Oh my god, I can't believe you're implying that the 2008 VMAs didn't benefit her, at all, lol. She crashed and burned, her breakdown was very much public, she hit rock bottom at the 2007 VMAS with the worst performance of her career, which everyone saw and talked about for months. Next year everyone ~was~ curious, fan or not, they wanted to see what was going to happen, they even rooted for her. She finally came back looking gorgeous and won 3 awards that she didn't deserve, then BAM! next day her label announces the release of a single and ~comeback album.
And yes, Womanizer broke a record, big deal, it was all hype, you simply can't deny it. Many female artists sold way more than Womanizer around the same time, it just wasn't the "first" week because these songs started low and climbed their way to the top. i.e. Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" sold 420k a few weeks later, it just wasn't her first week on the chart.
That's where you can tell the difference between a genuine hit and hitting #1 based on hype, one climbs slowly and keeps increasing in sales while the other just debuts high and plummets down the charts.

I'm not implying it didn't do ANYTHING, but I don't think people said "Oh I'm going to buy 'Womanizer' & 'Circus' because Britney was 100x better at the VMAs this year

".
"Just Dance" sold 420k during XMAS week, in
JANUARY, 3 months after "Womanizer" debuted. Not a "few weeks". And that was because of not only Xmas time & gift cards as we are in now, her song was just beginning to blow up. If "Womanizer" had released during that time, it would've sold big numbers as well. So you fail trying to compare & downplay.
286k is not just a "big deal". It broke a 1st-week record, the song was getting amazing reviews, people loved it. Of course there was hype, what you expect there not to be any?
GaGa was very much unknown and "Just Dance" blew up. Now she is another artist who gets a hit out the box when its first released. And I hope you're not implying "Womanizer" plummeted down the charts.

It stayed in the Top 10 for MONTHS, as did "Circus" & "3".
You're such a stan, I love it.
