Second paragraph is absolutely true, however, you can't take those conditions and apply them only where it's most convenient. Gaga sold half of what Britney sold, but albums in general sell half of what they did in the late 90s'. Likewise, the lower peak positions of Britney's earlier singles compared to Gaga's were because they were released before the dawn of the digital era. Gaga's album sales are the standard of pop success
today, just like Britney's were in her prime. Even "legendary" Britney and LEGENDARY Madonna are lucky to sell a couple milli with a new release.
