It doesn't for me but that's because I've synced my iPod(s) with so many different computers. I transferred all of my purchases to my laptop yesterday and all the play counts are blank.

I stopped caring about iTunes plays long time ago, iTunes always somehow found a way to get deleted or so.

Last.fm is great, I only use it to all of my play counts saved. Did you download the Scrobbler?
