Straight guys RESPECT that, and that's what makes them comfortable to admit they like these artists. Rihanna's more of an anomaly since everyone knows she's a puppet; her coolness is what carries her through.

I do agree with this to an extent, but it's not always the case.

Well, I'm talking about the straight guys who are mostly fans or rock or hip-hop - genres where is is NECESSARY to write your own stuff.

Also, Pitchfork is indie - and for more mainstream people, Pink and Perry would be the girls they'd flock to. Somewhere Aguilera would fit into this puzzle as well.
