I actually think Kumi's next studio album will perform really well though. Possibly even 500k total
Agreed. Here's the thing. While Ayu will continue to stomp all over Kumi and Namie in terms of physical single sales her next album will deffo struggle to pass the 300k mark IMO while I see Namie doing 500-600k and Koda maybe 400-500k. Also Suki De has been Koda's second real hit after Lollipop overall and that will deffo help her album sales.
Physical single sales in Japan these days are mostly a competition for fanbases. The real popularity measure for a song/single's success is how it does overall digitally and both Suki De and Lollipop have been two of Koda's biggest hits in a long time.

!!!
As I've said b4 at this point it's just Ayu's hardcore fans who are purchasing her stuff.
Physical sales more or less come down to who has the stronger fanbase or more loyal fanbase while digital sales actually reflect what the general public thinks of your song.
Just look at Kana Nishino.
None of her singles have yet to hit 100k physically yet her album is the biggest selling female album of the year so far. All thanks to her numerous digital hits.
I do like Kumi and all, but I do think "crossroad" is a lot better than Ku's single. We should get "Virgin Road" & "Sweet Season" PV in a few days. I'm so excited!

I was just thinking imagine if BoA had released Hurricane Venus, Copy&Paste, and GAME as a triple A side single in Japan. I think if they did massive promo, had 4 versions, many live performances it could do 75,000 physically and do well digitally.
Ayu's albums still sell well, and she has a HUGE fan base. Ku's albums will eventually drop like Ayu's in the future and so will Namie's. Ayu has been the subject of hype for years so it is common sense that her sales may continue to drop. Hype fades after a while. Look at previous J-pop legends.
Just to put our fave's recent success into perspective
Best Selling Studio Album Since Oricon Year 2007 from Our Faves
1.) Koda Kumi - Black Cherry (1,031,408) (2007)
2.) Utada Hikaru - Heart Station (1,011,373) (2008)
3.) Ayumi Hamasaki - Secret (675,400) (2007)
4.) Namie Amuro - Past<Future (580,000) (2010)

Kana's the IT girl right now, but honestly, do you think she will be as relevant in 12 years like Ayu is now?
Ayu may be flopping now, but she's been in the game for more than a decade and still has a huge fanbase. I don't see Kana beating that.

Ayu isn't really flopping though =/
People on atrl use the term 'flop' way to much. Ayu isn't as successful as she used to be, but her sales are still very reasonable.
^ Namie has been in the game since 1995 and is selling more. lol. Koda has also been in the game for a decade now.
This!
I wouldn't say Ayu's a big flop but she's obviously suffering from a decline ... there's no denying that.
Namie was able to make a comeback from her flop slump but I don't think Ayu can. I think she'll just keep falling and falling to tell you the truth :-/

Namie's sales over the past 15 years have been up and down. So has Ku's. Whereas Ayu's sales have been steady. How do you know the same won't happen to Namie again?

She won't fall to the point where she becomes irrelevant... like Ami Suzuki
I think her sales will decline very slowly, she won't keep on falling though.

I dont but Ayu's sales are certainly not steady. They have been declining ever since Kumi really exploded onto the scene and since then have just continued to go down, down, and down. While Namie may flop again then comeback I don't see Ayu ever recovering, just falling more with each album.
