Sometimes an underground/independent song will break into the UK charts with zero airplay (outside of pirate radio) and these acts wouldn't stand a chance if we counted airplay. Well, BEP had dominance. To me, I don't care if a song is on top for a couple of weeks...or a lot of weeks, for that matter, because that means it clearly has the multi-format power to achieve this feat. The fact of the matter is that while there are flaws in the system, the Billboard Hot 100 is the most accurate account of what songs are selling the most and being heard by the most people.
