Promoting yourself doesn't make you commercial. Lykke Li did a good bit of TV appearances for her album, and the singles Little Bit & I'm Good I'm Gone were the most commercial tracks on Youth Novels.

In 08, she was definently trying to make it in the mainstream & she was trying too hard to not care about success. This non-commercial thing she pulls doesn't work for me.

Indie (independent label) isn't a genre, but some of it has a certain sound compared to most stuff on a major label. Alternative is basically what most of us are referring to.

And yes, to the other part, but rather "alternative."

That's what I figured after thinking about it but I wasn't sure. Cause I always see people say "indie music" as if it's a genre, but I know what alternative is. Thanks.

Maria Mena is cool, but a bit bland. Now I see what BeyonceDoll means by boring indie. I want rock & ballads with a harder edge, not that "me & my guitar" stuff.
