BlackPink is modeled after 2NE1, Red Velvet is f(x) 2.0, they aren't really similar

The dynamic + image is totally different. 2NE1 were supposed to have this "intimidating" "non-girly idols" image, and BP are all about being girly, super pretty, appealing, and with a "sophisticated" vibe.

That's just because they're not pretty (sans Dara), not because they were intentionally made to be like that.

CL's good looking though, maybe not in a conventional way but she oozes charisma and confidence. If Hyolyn has a girly image with SISTAR, then CL could've definitely pull it off

True, they are meant to be a bit girlier (mostly thanks to Apink member-esque Jisoo) but they have strong 2ne1 influence. Nothing against her but Rose is a bit of a Bom/CL imitator in terms of her voice Jennie too, to some extent.

Their lyrics are quite different though. I don't see BlackPink doing anything even slightly like Ugly.

Umm, CL IS good looking, and so is Minzy. & Yes that was their image, YG was vocal about it. And in their early MV's they were acting "intimidating" and not what you'd expect from a Korean girlgroup idol group.
Minzy grinding everywhere, CL's badass image, Dara's weird hair and quirkiness, and Bom's whole"4d persona", smashing things in MV's, being dressed weirdly etc
They aren't the typical jaw-shave'd botch-nose'd whitewashed SM "visuals XD" but they were really pretty. 
It's only brainwashed simple-minded Kpoppers who think 2NE1 were not pretty. Yawn
