Mariah and Whitney are iffy. Whitney's career has been marred, clearly, and her voice is totally gone. She would have been up there with Aretha if her personal life hadn't taken a wrong turn. Mariah is so inconsistent in terms of success, and she is treated more like a "current" singer by the media than as a "legend." She always has something to prove. Madonna does not.

Mariah makes music, and she doesn't need the trashy sex stuff to sell. Whitney's success is about her talent, not scandals. And Shania is a legend too, because she can sell everytime she put an album out and she has talent. Madonna has more to prove than these three: she needs to prove that 1) she can sing; 2) she can write good songs; 3) she can dance (since she's a dance-pop performer).
