Me knowing.... all of the songs? Wow
One of These Nights and Unconditional Love are absolutely my favourites. OOTN is such a good ballad, I just... and that live version of Unconditional Love just elevated an already great song.
Green Aphrodisiac is super good too. Nice to see Trapezoid of Ants. But I love your #1. Such a unique find, and that dreamlike surreal feel of the song is insane.

Wait now I totally hear that Kimbra comparison! That's v cool
imho Green Aphrodisiac and Horse Print Dress are on another level compared to the rest of the album, especially all those boring ballads and midtempos (In the Dark, High, Push on for the Dawn)
I mean her bad songs are still better than a lot of people's good songs but still

Ugh Unconditional Love really is great. It's too bad the top 5 was just so strong. I think it didn't make it for me because I saw Esperanza live, and when she performed that song it was just out of this world. Probably one of the best songs I've ever heard played in person, it was amazing. The whole show was amazing but that song in particular was breathtaking. Now when I listen to the record it doesn't really have the same feeling as the live show.

Happy - 7.8/10
This girl is so weird, I love it. The random fast synth (?) contradicting with the slow vocals and pad is so Bjork. I'll admit, sometimes I get exhausted listening to this but the chorus is everything so it keeps me coming back and the song evolves quite nicely (going from just the synth tapping to a random brass section to full rock lol -- which at times feels like it just happened to be ~edgy with no real reason) so it's never boring, I just have to be in a specific mood for it. I also love how she named the album Puberty 2, lol.
This Is How a Garden Grows 7/10
You've shown me some Eska in dub track before and woo, she is a TALENT. Sometimes her music is a bit slow for me (I hate saying that, but let me be honest) but her delivery overcomes any hurdles brought by the tempo or hard-to-digest melody. She's captivating without a doubt, and I already added her album to my library because of dub track lol. The note at 3:27 is so soothing but different from the rest of the song's soothing atmosphere. I don't know if I'm making sense, but i love it when small things make me feel weird things.
Lying Has to Stop - 7/10
I admit, I hate their aesthetic but the music is so cool lol (a lite vaporware tea). I'm not a fan of their low voices but the high parts are cute. I'll never touch your bum ugh, I honestly don't know what to say about the lyrics, let me pretend this was a cute instrumental. The detuned guitars sound so cool, almost like if they were being played too slowly on a record player. The production in general was definitely made by crazy, passionate, and creative people which is always appreciated.
Power - 8/10
Despite your lack of video taste (how can you not like it?), I love you for introducing me to this complete bop. You're right about the sexy, sexy baseline, it stays pumping throughout. There's rarely anything better than a lighthearted bop with obvious talent put into it, except maybe depressing bops with talent. The sound design stayed pretty loyal to the 70s, I can hear the Marvin Gaye like string section and bells (?) (not that this compares to Gaye, just in some aspects). They obviously had a goal in mind and reached for it instead of putting things together (like I do all the time).
Rejoice - 8/10
I was getting to drag, but when he started singing, it turned direction unexpectedly, a rather enjoyable one even if this is pretentious hipster music. It has a very classic vibe and their talent/passion comes through nicely. The electric guitar is the best. The vocalist is ok but it goes well with this, I guess. And whatever woodwind instrument is playing is such a random/nice addition lol. Honestly a lot of these songs are so much better instrumentals than they are full songs The keyboard player goes OFF at 3:50ish and beyond. This managed to be dynamic enough to keep me listening the whole time, so good for them the video triggers me, though.
Feed Me Jack - 7.5/10
This low key reminds me of the Ray of Light album so I dig it (but again the vocals do nothing to me, it must be this entire genre, the delivery and angst is something I don't relate to I guess, but I do see its appeal. Then again, a lot of what I'm into is more basic nn). This was the perfect length, so kudos to that!
Apollyon of Blue Room - 6.5/10
The melody is interesting, I feel like I've heard it before, very Beatles/early rock vibe. Overall, not my type of music nn, but it wasn't offensive I guess. "Mood: Enigmatic" Pears ha impact.
Cigarettes After Sex - 9/10
You already know this won me over in the dub. There's something so beautiful and interesting in its simplicity that keeps me listening over again.
너 땜에 맘이 맘이 맘이 맘이 괴로워요 - 8.5/10
Wow at this vaporware tea, I have a friend who would definitely enjoy this. I love/hate this at the same time. I can't find it in apple music but i'd add it to my library tbh. Just nice random music to pass time, but it demands for your complete attention sometimes. Versatile music always wins. The video is a KII. I love how it's centered on music first and foremost. If it had any more vocals than it does (all which serve more as a prop here) it would have taken away some magic.
Nerve - 8.5/10
Woo, the talent. I remember this as well. She's a bit extra with that random mbira looking thing in the beginning but this whole thing as a weird vibe that lives up to it. A lot of it sounds improvised which is cool, keeps it interesting despite having a rather flat beat. The vocal effects are life tbh. They way they're mixed perfectly so that they are so obvious but still let her beautiful natural tone and vibrato shine I'm a sucker for ambient electric guitar, too and they excelled at that here. I have no idea what she's singing about but that's cool, I'd rather not know, I get enough emotion from the whole thing in general. They did that.

Zamn zaddy
Happy - I also have to be in a specific mood for this. Idk I can recognize objectively it's pretty bad but it can be an enjoyable listen.
This is How a Garden Grows - I thought you liked this song more than you do dd. It is pretty slow, it's not the most engaging listen but I think her delivery always keeps things interesting. She's a very clever singer.
Lying Has to Stop - Surprised you gave this the same score as Eska! Yes shout out those detuned guitars, that totally makes the song for me. What a great touch.
Power - yesss. Great song, my only criticism is how unoriginal it is. But damn it is just so smooth, like sexy water liquid soil.
Rejoice - That's funny, I never thought of this as pretentious. Idk I just find it so light-hearted and silly and that's why I love it. This song in particular is so dynamic and engaging. I love how purposefully cheesy it is. There's actually such a high level of musicality present in this band.
Humanzoo - Yeah this is a cute listen, nothing insane although I love the 5/8
Apollyon of Blue Room - Also not super special, but I love the way it makes me feel ~enigmatic~ and I find it really pretty. I like the contrasting feels of each sections
K - Definitely agree, it's just surreal. I love songs that feel surreal. This song really feels out of a dream
너 땜에 맘이 맘이 맘이 맘이 괴로워요 - klasfjadskl this song is basically a joke to me but at the same time I can't stop listening to it. I totally feel everything you said, it's random and odd but enjoyable
Nerve - stan for this white angst! The mixing, vocal effects etc. are soooo genius, and they compliment her huge voice so well. I like the handheld-harp thing because its random cameo makes me laugh

Just gave your #1 a listen - it's not really to my liking, but no one can dispute that it's not a beautifully produced soon. You're right, it is dreamy. Reminds me a tad of some of Honne's stuff.
Nice job! Great best of.

I didn't like Spiral of Ants at first either but then I listened to it once on accident and it suddenly hit me. I don't know exactly what changed, but I do remember I was unimpressed at first.

Surprise, bitches! I decided to really quickly also do my top 10 albums! Here was the criteria:
- The album could be released any year as long as I started listening to it in 2016.
- Only one album per artist.
and yeah lol I think that's it so here's my list!
| 10. Queen of Denmark
John Grant
Sorry lovesong! This whole album is definitely a little crude, lacking subtlety and sometimes over the top. But, I don't know, I enjoy listening to it! It's good music for walks through the suburbs filled with ennui. There's a lot of humour here, whether intentional or not, on tracks like Sigourney Weaver or Jesus Hates F*ggots (yes that's the song title). And sometimes, on tracks like It's Easier or Outer Space, it can be really really beautiful and give you those lumberjack gay in the wintery woods feels. I think John Grant does a lot with a little here. | . | . | | 9. Skiptracing
Mild High Club
This album is one of those albums that creates its own world and it's so cool. It's very indie-chic but there's a little bit of jazz in there too on songs like Head Out. The whole album is kind of dream-like. To be honest I didn't listen to this album that much because there wasn't a song that on its own really stood out to me but this is an outstanding body of work. It doesn't need to reinvent the wheel. It will make you feel sort of nostalgic by using familiar-sounding melodies and such but also experiments a little and establishes its own identity too. | . | . | | 8. Troubadour
The Stepkids
There are some really cool tracks on this album. After all, four(!) tracks from the ten-song record made my list of the top songs! Unfortunately there are also a couple big duds (Insecure Troubadour, Bitter Bug). But the rest of the album is really cool! I sort of feel like it's music made more for musicians; there's a lot of subtle touches that an ear trained in theory might pick out more, like the poly-rhythms in Art of Forgetting. The production is great; there are so many layers and lots of nuance. Overall, though, it's just some super fun, meaningless white-boy soul that doesn't need to be deep and heartfelt most of the time. | . | . | | 7. Corpo-Mente
Corpo-Mente
This album kind of blew my mind. It's this crazy fusion of opera with prog rock, and normally I hate both of those things, but now that they're together it's so cool and interesting. The album is dark and intense. At the very least, you have never heard anything like it before. This album didn't have any huge standout tracks for me but Scylla is the most hooky. I think this album is proof positive that the point of music isn't always to be pretty. There's something engaging about the ugliness of the sound at times. | . | . | | 6. ESKA
ESKA
ESKA has this amazing musical maturity. Listening to her album, you get the feeling she's worked in every genre and has now decided she wants to transcend it. Of course, the power and uniqueness of her voice are a big plus, but it's the unique atmosphere of the songs that will stick the most. ESKA crafts her songs in an incredibly creative way, and takes new and innovative approaches to how her songs operate. Every song is full of pure, unironic emotion. This one's a grower, mostly because it's so different from other music out there. | . | . | | 5. GARY
MANGELWURZEL
Okay, so the sound quality of this album makes it pretty clear it's straight off of Bandcamp. But god, it's so fun! It's totally off the walls and it knows just when to pull its punches. The album is so weird and idiosyncratic; it's the perfect album to dance like a spaz to. The vocalist is such a talent. She sounds pretty when it's appropriate but also knows when to howl and scream. The band's style is so explosive and engaging. I hear this band is amazing live so if they're ever near you you should go to see them | . | . | | 4. Heatwarmer
Heatwarmer
I have a hard time explaining why I love this album so much. I think a good way to articulate it is that its childlike innocence will remind you of the childlike innocence within yourself. The music, while not sacrificing high levels of musicality, is so purely happy that it reminds you of the parts of yourself that are purely happy as well. The album is uncool and perfectly so. It makes me feel like an immature, happy dork and I love it. The huge arrangements are so pleasing to the ear. | . | . | | 3. The Ashen Tang
Royce Wood Junior
I feel like this album is a breath of fresh air. So many artist don't try to do anything new, and many of the ones that do totally disregard the other side of things (i.e. making a good song still). The Ashen Tang is so cool because it keeps the listener in mind but also experiments with electronic effects and song form. There are those songs that are instantly accessible like Midnight, but even those have something more complex going on. It's all very tactful. Few artists are both experimental and fun, and Royce has a voice of gold too. Listen with headphones. | . | . | | 2. Emily's D+Evolution
Esperanza Spalding
Man, is this album cool! Esperanza Spalding is always switching it up album to album and this was totally different from everything she's done before. I'll admit I didn't like it at first, and you probably won't too, but something about this clicked for me. The level of musicianship on this album is intense and it's pretty breathtaking just to listen to the sheer amount of skill and creativity present. It's so crazy to me Esperanza even came up with the concept for this album and its sound because I could never. | . | . | | 1. Spirit Phone
Lemon Demon
People who know me know that if I really, really love a song or an album, I can honestly talk about it for hours straight. This, for me, is one of those albums. I think I read or heard or something that this album took ten years and you can really hear it in the music. Every single sound, every single minute detail is polished and intentional. This album really creates a whole entire digital 80's sounding video game fantasy. It's explosive and in your face and it always lifts up my mood. (I have to stop myself here dd) |
This is really the end of my Best Of! Thanks to everyone for listening! I hope you found something you enjoy!
