50 Shades was written by a woman and 99% of its audience are women. It simply portrays a common female fantasy that most aren't willing to publicly disclose, hence the "book" (being generous) blew up thanks to Kindle because no one has to find out what you're reading on there.

It's an absolute disgrace to literature but I don't think its misogynistic. It's not coming from a place of degrading women, and is massively embraced by women. It's a sexual fantasy that positions the man as all powerful and dominant, and the protagonist (and the millions of women who love it) get off on that.
