You fell from the sky...

2. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds - Jesus Alone
Skeleton Tree was a record birthed in unimaginable pain. Nick Cave wrote most of the lyrics after his son's death. While the event is never explicitly mentioned on the album, the theme of grief and personal loss appears in a more or less straightforward way in every song. Each one has something heartbreaking and spectacular about it, yet it was Jesus Alone which from the very first listen seemed to hit me the hardest. It's the track where Nick's voice is the coldest, almost robotic, but maybe ironically, the absolutely devoid of emotion recitation is the most painful and frightening moment. Especially taking into consideration the lyrics where Cave mentions a lot of different people who, on first glimpse, have nothing in common. Once we get to the end of the song, we do get to know what unites them though: none of them is gonna escape death. Perhaps a scary but certainly thought-provoking and strong conclusion.

Yes Cranes is definitely one of those sad songs that make you fee better. It's healing. A Coldplay tea
Jesus Alone is also my favorite from Nick's album.

Af hverju alltaf er svona flókiđ?

1. Sigur Rós - Óveđur
Sigur Rós' huge popularity has always been a mystery to me. I mean, yeah, I would think their songs are pretty but hardly any really stayed with me for a bit longer. As 2016 showed, I just had to wait for the right one.
It's really hard to pinpoint what makes Óveđur so special. Is it the simple, one would say even basic, yet getting more intense and more addictive with each second melody? Is it the clear, organic production? Is it Jón Birgisson's vocal performance which starts subtly but turns into a piercing scream by the end of the track? Is it something about the lyrics - in spite of me understaning none of them, each word has a really interesting spelling which adds to the overall atmosphere of the composition. The answer is... unclear. On the one hand, yes, all these elements do make the track amazing but at the same time, they all seem so small and unimportant in comparison to the track as a whole, as a sum of all its parts. It's just so much more than them, it's monumental, stunning and unforgettable. It's ethereal, taking me all the way to Iceland with those breath-takingly beautiful views. Coming back to the beginning of the paragraph, I could never truly answer to myself why it's my SOTY but there were never any doubts that it would be this.

Trochę niespodziewane top 3 (zwłaszcza #1), ale nie będę narzekał Muszę posłuchać zdecydowanie więcej i Nicka i Sigur Rós, bo nie jestem do końca zaznajomiony z ich dyskografiami. Cranes in the Sky jest piękne, chyba moja ulubiona piosenka Sol po Losing You

Well it's awesome tho so deserved either way~
Jesus Alone has that haunting atmosphere around it that's really impactful and I love it.
I also adore cranes and its melodies. Nice singles countdown as it was straight to the point.

I.... don't think I've ever listened to Sigur Ros
Cranes in the Sky is a great pick! Nick's album was painful, it's really hard for me to ever listen to it again honestly.

So before we start the album tracks list, let me just mention that it's a bit of a filler part of the countdown. Not because I think they're unimportant, I just want to give myself more time to procrastinate with the album write-ups <3 Some of the tracks mentioned here are outstanding parts of weaker albums, some others may not be obvious standouts of their respective release - they're just representing an LP I enjoyed a lot but not enough to put it on my album list, and the tracks on the highest places are both! But yeah, if a track is mentioned here, the album it's on will not appear later on.
Without further ado...
20.
I have no problem with One Direction's music, to be honest, What Makes You Beautiful and Story of My Life are pop anthems, possibly better than most of your faves could ever release. But now it's time for solo Zayn to shine and while there is still a lot of room for improvement, his debut was solid. I liked Wrong or She a lot but it's Drunk which stayed with me for the longest, it's just really chill and showcases his voice nicely. | 19.
The problem with Skin was that while it was certainly a pleasant, easy listen, it wasn't exactly... memorable. I literally forgot how all the tracks went like the second they ended, thankfully, there is an exception to every rule. The featured artists may try to do their best here but on Wall **** Flume proves he's not only as good as his collaborator. He's actually at his best, most interesting and most mysterious with nobody interrupting. | 18.
It might not be the best recommendation but I felt like this was more of an obligatory entry after me snubbing The 7th Sense like that but it's still a great song in its own right so everything's fine. While most of their mini has a pretty current, modern, ~hip hop-ish production, this stands out as a more traditional, softer moment. Perhaps not as instantly catchy as the lead single or Wake Up but beats them in terms of longevity! | 17.
My feelings towards Abel pre-Starboy were... mixed, to say the least. His new album is far from perfect as well, however, once we get through all the unnecessary, overly long filler, we can get to the great stuff. And as tragic as it sounds, my favourite was an interlude but whew, what an interlude it is. Dalai's ethereal vocals really elevate it and the production is fantastic. It, Sidewalks and Six Feet Under are such a nice 1-2-3 punch too! |
16.
This album kind of got lost in the sea of the May 6 releases for me. It's very good, I just hardly ever felt like coming back to it. And even if I still don't remember how half of it sounds, I do adore the album's title track which also happens to be its opener. It's peaceful, relaxing and soothing and the strings sound truly beautiful as a background to JMSN's pleasant, calm voice. Listen to the entire album, even as background music, though, it's worth it. | 15.
Ugh, I feel like I should love this album but I just don't. I obviously appreciate the overall sound and the lyrical themes but at the same time, there's just something missing, it all seems a little bit forgettable, I'd definitely take more standouts over consistency in this case. That said, I did enjoy a few tracks, Lite Weight in particular. Kaytranada does a really nice job here not overpowering Anderson but complimenting his performance, and the choir is a lovely touch too. | 14.
Banks is still a fascinating creature to me, I don't remember anyone recently whose music would get old with such quickness? The Altar shook me at first but after giving it a second spin I felt like never coming back to it. I won't deny her talent though, every once in a while she does have her moments, such as the beautiful, haunting closer (I don't acknowledge the other track, sorry!). Slow songs are definitely her strong side, she should totally develop it more. | 13.
I was initially going to put Timeless here but he made it a single, wow, ruining my countdown a bit. Either way, yes, the bad things you've heard about The Colour in Anything are most likely true, it'd need some serious trimming of the fat to become a truly good record. This, however, stood out, partially because it's early into the LP before I get tired of it but mostly because James still knows how to write a thrilling, heart-wrenching song, he just needs to keep it more concise. | 12.
Corinne's best music came in pain - The Sea, her first album after her husband's death is a masterpiece to me. While The Heart Speaks in Whispers doesn't quite reach those highs, it's good to see she's in a better state of mind. And after all, she's still capable of creating great tunes, as evidenced by Carmel, whose chorus melody is one of the prettiest things I've heard in a long time. I also liked every track which follows it on the tracklist (the deluxe edition included). | 11.
A more of a shoutout to the entire The Dreaming Room which unfortunately didn't make my album list than a mention of this certain song (although it's of course lovely and beautiful!), her four best tracks were all singles, oop. Anyway, Laura seems just like such a colorful musician, she can do uplifting tracks just as well as dramatic orchestral compositions and subtle, quiet ballads, such as this one, and all the time she stays authentic. Without a doubt someone worth following. |

Skeleton Tree is certainly really heavy emotionally, it hit just the right spots for me though, I can definitely see myself coming back to it in the years to come.

I'm slowly working my way through their discography, I liked their most recent album much more than I did in 2013! I also got to see them live, unfortunately was v tired so I probably took less than I could have from it but it was quite an experience!

Drunk is cute, I think there are some better songs on the album tho
Stargirl is good but I wish they didn't waste the collab on an interlude
I find To The Hilt pretty boring Haunt, Poltergeist and Trainwreck >>
