Maybe it’s nonsense to call one of the most famous singers of all time underappreciated, but here we are: in a year flooded with bar-raising R&B albums, Rihanna’s ANTI was possibly the least appreciated for what it brought to the table.
Rihanna was all over the map here, and in this roaming, she grabbed more room to experiment and invent than ever before. The result is her first great album, a messy, intense, strange, murky, imperfect, brilliant record that, like a millennial pop Kid A, dismantled its own genre while remaining stadium-size accessible.
There's nothing really to talk about. Rih went back into hiding (hasn't even been spotted on set)
Anti is slaying Best of 2016 lists and LOTB is another hit.

It honestly annoys me how publications keep saying ANTI is her first great album. Like Rated R was also a great moment smh.

Yeah I've rolled my eyes each time I read that but to be unbiased Anti is the first album I listen to without skipping a single track. So perhaps because it doesn't have filler ppl are equating that to "first real/great album"

I've noticed that too. They dismissed all her efforts.
Just because she received the most praise with ANTI, doesn't mean this is her only good album.
I'm not surprised when Rih herself when she said her own old songs aren't timeless. At least perform them on the tour, but no, she prefers to perform that pointless medley of her features that she barely sings any word of Live Your Life.

The critics dismissing her previous music tells me that they still don't get it and that they will find something else to bitch about by the time R9 comes out they simply go along with the most popular narrative and I don't trust them at all.
