Nicki had HYPE pre-Pills N Potions.
That song killed the momentum she was building.
It's all about keeping the hype when promoting an album and WSM would've definitely maintained it.

But would it have been as successful as Anaconda (which isn't even the most successful track from that album, but we're talking about the timeframe from April - June 2014)? Would it have been enough to launch the album off of? :michael4:
I need you guys to place yourselves back into 2014.

Realize that PILLS was the problem.
Bitch had My *****, Danny Glover, Lookin Ass, Chi-Raq, and even Yasss Bish popping off, giving people hope, only to release PILLS N POTIONS as the single.
WSM would've been a success just off the hype she had alone.

we all know a combination of beyonce's talent and showing off her ass saved nicki's career in 2014, we were THERE
now let's talk about the MUSIC, and how GOYK was robbed of the top 10!

So why were they not buying the music? I'm aware Lookin Ass was probably the only track that she released before PnP commercially, but this entire argument is about how Anaconda was probably the only course of action to take in 2014.
You guys are being history revisionists
Nicki is probably in the best place commercially due to the the fact that sales are obsolete and streaming is the main metric helps her because that was always her strong suit, and anything she releases now will probably shoot up because again, she's in a good commercial space.
But what I'm SAYING is that Want Some More wouldn't have been a smash, and I'm saying it because of your argument about her pushing her viral stuff/her viral stuff happening to be successful.

Most likely no. But when compared to PnP ( that performed similar to RTM despite being pure pop), it would have actually done pretty well for an all urban, rap lead single.
It would excuse Anaconda's gimmick because it was the lyrical track beforehand that set up her urban audience who wasn't sure of the album. PnP literally did the opposite, it ran people away & Anaconda only added to it. WSM would have balanced everything out.
You also have to remember A LOT of urban songs went viral during that year.

No, let's talk about this Joshua.
Would WSM be a smash if released instead of PnP?

Every time I whip it, I be talkin' so reckless
He said, "Damn, Nicki, it's tight, " I say, "Yeah, *****, you right."
He say, "Damn, bae, you so little, but you be really takin' that pipe."
I say, "Yes, daddy, I do, gimme brain like NYU."
I said, "Teach me, *****, teach me. All this learnin' here is by you."
this is what TALENT sounds like!

If this is the case, she should be fine releasing something lyrical then. Something that'll break the internet & create dialogue, will literally give the some success.

Okay, I personally don't believe that Anaconda would've been released if PnP was a smash. She probably would've released something else, especially knowing that she didn't want to put Anaconda on the album but Republic was like "CHILL that was a Top 10/your only smash from the album up to that point" (Only didn't start to really smash until after the album dropped).
I remember I had a convo with Nas about this, and I said otherwise back then, but if the album was done and she released it a few weeks after the VMAs, it would've had a massive opening because there was undeniable hype around her then.

So Willy you think if Anaconda didn't happen, The Pinkprint would've been on hold until further notice?

I agree! This entire convo was about Nicki's prior single choices in a different commercial landscape.

I think it would've been.
It would have sold decent still but they wouldn't want to risk embarrassing sales.
It's hard to recover from that because it creates so much negative coverage and affects the GP.

Exactly.
It's incredibly hard to recover from that and the stigma is pretty long-lasting, and it would've have been pretty for Nicki to release an album that didn't do well at the same exact time that Iggy was seeing outstanding commercial success.
---
Again, this discussion is about pre-NM4 single choices/what Nicki chooses to sell to the GP, not anything referring to NM4.

from a marketing standpoint, nicki was in a weird place 2013-2014 because she was trying to change her image from pop diva to be seen as a competent female rapper again
but the problem was that her serious tracks didn't stick, and she was being beaten out by the hot new female rapper on the block, so she looked washed-up
she needed a stronger character, and she chose to be the over-sexualized rap diva who was all about her ass and appealing to the male gaze. + the beyonce association and she basically had a golden ticket back to the A list.
also, iggy's self-destruction as a meme made nicki look like a legend in comparison

I can only see success when listening to Want Some More.
But that's just me.
No, it wouldn't have been as successful as Anaconda, because that was MADE to be viral.
The urban hype she had, a bomb video, a bomb song, and a bomb BET Awards performance there's no way WSM would've flopped/be less successful than Pills.
