Let me play Moderator now, because it's the role I like best.
I want to talk with you all about Rene Elizondo, his time spent with Janet, and his supposed creative contributions to her career. I don't recall the topic being touched upon earlier. He was a very important figure in Janet's life during the period that was her most successful, not just commercially, but artistically. During the divorce proceedings, Elizondo alleged that he was forced to forego writing credits on many of Janet's biggest hits. He
is credited as a major collaborator on The Velvet Rope.
After his exit, there was a noticeable drop-off in the overall quality of Janet's albums, and the social consciousness that to varying degrees characterized all of her albums vanished.
Does this lend credence to his claims that he was a more active participant in Janet's creative process than her liner notes suggest?
Or did the divorce just happen to coincide with the moment Janet's artistic output began to decline?
I said all of that in a halting talk radio voice, by the way.
