I totally agree, but I want to add that if an American company is going to showcase other cultures, it would be great if someone native or closely tied to that culture could somehow benefit too. In the case of fashion, for example, half of the models should be from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

It does get tricky when assessing races for people. In this situation the statement that there is a lack of diversity in the models is not for nationality, but specifically the beauty standards that are put to the forefront and glorified by VS. Alessandra Ambrosio is a latina woman. She is not white. But her parents are Italian and Polish.

I believe the discourse on cultural appropriation is over the top nowadays, but it exists. This is...ridiculous. Especially when discussing cultural appropriation. You guys are taking the argument left field. A few models strut down the runway in Mexican, Japanese, South American, etc. garments and you ask where is the diversity, as it relates to the difference CULTURES being presented. You then turn around and claim it's not about nationality, which in part correlates to the representative cultures, but beauty standards. Totally unrelated.

We're now nitpicking what's considered diverse.

You’ve misunderstood.

If we say, “Where is the diversity? Why didn’t they put the Chinese styles on a Chinese model?” and you argue that they did because a model from China whose parents are both of Swedish ancestry is not the same thing. Sure, she was born and raised in China, and is Chinese but Victoria's Secret using her is not necessarily promoting diversity if the model herself doesn't present diversity in her looks. Models are chosen for a reason, and it's all a about how they look. That's why it's tricky to start nitpicking their races, or their nationalities or their lineages but talking about the diversity visible on the runway.

And culture isn't necessarily nationality. For example much of Swiss, Austrian and German culture are alike but they are three very different nations.

As for nitpicking what is diverse, if the same bone structure, the same 3 nose types, the same big eyes, the same skin tones are on a runway it’s not diverse, no matter if every model is from a different place on earth.
