Celebrating another culture shouldn't be seen as offensive.

Cultural appropriation is not an invention, it’s not a tangible, created thing. It is wording used to describe an inovert form of racism that permeates through society and which has long gone unnoticed or unmentioned.
Over ten years ago, people started talking about appropriation and it’s only gotten more of a topic in recent years, but it’s definitely not just something that happened this year, even if you just noticed it.
Cultural appropriation is offensive because it's not a celebration but a mockery, a stereotype OR a theft of something without the negative cultural stigma that comes with it.
Examples include:
- Dressing as a Chinese person with a kimono on and chopsticks in your hair, neither of which are Chinese custom but which present an inaccurate idea of the culture and is used for humour rather than appreciation
- Wearing a native headtress at a festival, using an act reserved for only certain people but which has become an icon for white people of the native population, without any respect to what that actually means.
- Wearing dreadlocks, benefiting from the privilege of being white with dreadlocks without the consequences of being black with dreadlocks.
