Did Diamonds, Roar, Royals and other hits that came out before Spotify became super huge and it's importance started matter on the charts gain all those 200m+ streams on their own?
Because I don't quite understand how a song that is slaying on the radio and iTunes can't become huge on Spotify without playlists

Here are my thoughts:
I would think that playlists were less relevant in 2012 or 2013 than they are now because the proportion of Spotify users who are casual listeners has sharply increased since then.
In those early days of Spotify, I think most people using the service were very engaged fans who care a lot about music-- otherwise, they would not have been aware of Spotify.
Playlists are designed for the casual listener. It's like how you might turn on the radio for a car ride, not caring a ton about exactly which songs you hear but just wanting to listen to a general format of music. It's easy and allows you to discover new music. As such, playlists are really popular at workplaces and at parties.
My theory is that as Spotify became more known to the masses, a larger percentage of their userbase consisted of these casual listeners, those who don't care about music as much as we do. And this caused playlists to spike in popularity and take on the importance they hold today.
Whether a song needs playlists to succeed correlates pretty well with the genre of a song. Most urban songs that are popular on Spotify didn't need playlists to get there. On the flip side, you see a lot of European dance songs and pop songs without urban influences enter the top 50 solely due to inclusion on playlists. But it depends on how much a song appeals to the demographic that uses Spotify, which is disproportionately young and disproportionately listens to rhythmic/urban music (though less so than Apple Music's userbase).
By the way, most of the streams for the songs you mentioned are catalog streams.

It's interesting to see which Xmas songs are local and which appeal to both American and European audiences. Buble's rendition of It's Beginning... is super global, for example, but Jingle Bell Rock is more local.

If there was anyone I thought would beat or be close to Views' first week numbers, it was The Weeknd. Still tho. If Drake could do 245m on AM, imagine what the numbers would have been if he'd released wide. I'm shook.

With all the sales of the songs it wouldn't be like 150K combined at least? I think he will do more like 300K than the last numbers of HDD with the psychical is out in the middle of the week and there wasn't an update since than.
