Still, Ch-Ching kinda won
Now everyone will listen to I-ren's new sing if when it comes out
Eh. The only reason I-REN is a thing is because they released a song with the exact same title as another much more popular I... song that Korea couldn't find on MelOn.

I'm a proponent of not bothering with the old stuff since there's always new stuff coming out (with the exception of this time of the year, of course ). Once you find out about kpop, the discovery phase should be over. Now it's just about the experience of it.

Looking at Mamamoo's base, there's a lot of refugees from 2NE1, Miss a and fans of the SNSD-TTS genre. So when Mamamoo releases a single while YG, JYP and SM girls are all active, it's going to be tough. But as those promos wind down, they are now free to support their faves outside the family.
Plus, the end of the year is the perfect time for something like this to go on a run. Stuff like A pink and BtoB have done it with way less going for them. I mean, Mamamoo flopped all the way to #2 on Gaon.

Twice and China are just... not meant to be together. Almost half of the group is composed of Taiwanese and Japanese. China hates Japan. China hates the thought of Taiwan being 'another country.' BYE.
When Tzuyu and JYP knelt down before Beijing and chanted the praises for Onechina, that pretty much ensured their popularity, whether the Chinese people want it or not.

The Black Pink and GFriend stans mad that Twice won't let their feet off their scrawny necks
If GFRIEND stans are online, it's to play Starcraft or something, not reply to news articles. Blackpink stans seem to be rusty/beaten down by the Bom era. Most likely it's the nation of Taeyeonistan.
But there is also the phenomenon that comes from the SIXTEEN show being sorta popular with people outside the JYP family, and when they watched fave after fave get eliminated by girls who couldn't sing, that still ticks them off.
Kinda wonder what might've happened to Twice if it wasn't for the power of the Tzuyu.

Don't forget that despite being the world wide leader in boy group production, all Koreans outside specific demos hate boy groups -- just like the rest of the world. With the obvious exception of Big Bang. And maybe Block B. I dunno. If your boy group can give guys a usable pick up line, that can return a reprieve.

The "Hyomin designed" promo was a disaster. Really, all the quality girls that have wound up buried under the guidance of KKS decision making just makes T-ara's Korean success once upon a time all the more fluky.

China is an important market. Most of your favorite Korean agencies and fashion shiz have major Chinese stockholders.
This reminds me, in this game of corporate musical chairs between Loen, Daum, Kakao, SK, KT, whatever, I had missed the little fact that Chinese content giant Tencent now has a significant owership stake in Loen, and thus MelOn.

I give you Oh My Girl's debut thumbnail:
Yooa is currently Oh My Girl's #1. Seunghee has a lot of female fans. The Arin express is going to turn them into roadkill.

Keep in mind that China's national policy can be applied differently at a regional level. Especially if it can make Onechina money. Hong Kong is one of these regions.

Not sure, but I'm so happy Oh My Girl and Wassup have a connection now. So happy. No, really.
Now to hit submit before the thread gets closed now...
i feel like if i never discovered k-pop, my 2016 would have been complete **** musically & probably personally as well. i've met quite a few people that i talk to everyday that also like it just as much as i do and it's always great to be so involved into something, especially music.
the day i saw the video for 'Shake It' and was slayed to the high heavens. then EXO followed, then i went to this thread and asked for recommendations, and now i'm here with 32 favorite artists/groups (in my sig alone, the groups/artist i couldnt fit would extend that number to 60+) and i've never been truly fulfilled and happier. pop music is such a fun, magnificent genre and to have k-pop come out of the blue, and snatch me like no one else has done before (outside of my faves).....
even tho 2016 was a mess regarding everything else, musically, it's been the best year for me in the last 5 years. i can't even begin to go on & on raving about it either
I'm glad you love K-pop (and all the songs) so much
