I think that's a huge oversimplification of what happened and I think people overestimate the impact that the Comey thing had on the outcome of the election

Maybe. The moment it happened Trump and his supporters really started believing he could win. Hillary was about to press her closing argument/positive vision. I think the negative media cycle was enough to depress her turnout/send some undecideds to Trump. Hillary was being portrayed as a criminal under FBI investigation at the most important moment of the campaign. She couldn't defend herself because the FBI gave no information.
