You're (we're) just getting old. The music that was popular when you were 13-18 will always be the best for you because those are your coming of age years.
Songs today become hits like they always have: the industry selects its hits, pulls its strings, and some stick. Via radio and promotion mostly. But now some songs become hits due to going viral, but it's really not that many. It's mainly trap songs at this point.
What makes a song a hit is the same thing as always: catchiness, usually in the form of a melody. Every song in the Top 10 of the Hot 100 has a strong melodic hook and the production du jour ("chill" vibe, chopped and screwed vocal sample, midtempo).
