There is variety but there is hardly any identity. You have to really follow each group to get to know them. It doesn't come through in the music. Only in a few cases like 2NE1 and SNSD, which is why they became so popular and global.
And the variety itself is quite artificial. The manufactured nature of K-Pop means there is little room for emotion and artistry. It's different in the west because manufactured artists here are usually solo ones, and then it's easier to make "fake" music sound personal.
Of course there are different and more interesting Korean artists, but they're just not that popular, and not mentioned much in the K-Pop thread, let alone outside of it. So you can't expect non-fans to take that into account when they judge K-Pop as a whole.
