Trump is basically the scum of planet earth and republicans united behind him. Democrats have no one to blame but themselves.

The Democrats stayed home and the Republicans came out in full force. It's as simple as that. Hillary's campaign never took him seriously and stayed in the background so much hoping that he'd cause his own demise but it ended up backfiring. Democrats were complacent and thought Hillary had it in the bag and now they're reaping what they sowed.

This does affect the whole world, but I'm sure glad I don't live in America right now!

I'm still trying to understand what happened.
There were so many people out there desperate for change that they were able to accept a man that wants to ban Muslims from entering the country, punish women for having abortions, deport 11 million people, leave 20 million people with no health insurance, create more stop-and-frisk policies, completely ignore climate change, etc. They voted for this over Hillary Clinton?
I'd like to believe that most of his supporters are actually good people and not closet racists, homophobes, misogynists, etc but I just can't believe so many people, WHITE PEOPLE, are okay with this man leading the country. They really didn't care that he insulted literally every minority group there was? That he clearly only cares about being rich? That they just enabled white supremacy even more and made it acceptable to attack people just for being different? Hillary was worse than that?
It's amazing how some people still fail to acknowledge that white privilege exists when stuff like this happens. White America came out in huge numbers to make sure he won because they knew that they would be fine and it seriously annoys me. I thought this country was about embracing our differences and working together to become stronger as a union, but we just found out that there is still a VERY large number of people resistant to this.
It's so disappointing to know that in 2016, after all of the progress we've made and are trying to make, white America says nope and harms everyone else in the process. I know not every white person voted for him and that we can't really do anything about it now, but... WOW, they really don't care about us.

That played a part, yes, but for a lot of Americans they simply saw it as two flawed candidates. One who was a flawed outsider and one who was a flawed insider. Washington hasn't being doing **** for us for ages and so many (not I) chose to go with the flawed outsider as a big F U to Washington in hopes that Trump actually does what he promises. I don't think he'll be able to do a majority of what he's stated.

Because we didn't cater to them is the reason why they now have all of the power and we get nothing for the next 4 years.
Going back to the original point Adonis made, not everyone is made for college and/or not everyone can afford to go to college. Let's not forget that those who do go to college usually come out of it deep in debt and cannot get on their feet. It is completely elitist to assume everyone can or wants to take the same path as you in life. You should be able to make a decent living and live with dignity without having to go to college. The point of college should be for jobs/careers that require higher skills, not a requirement for whether or not you can make a decent living.
Is Trump and the republicans the answer to that? Hell ****ing no. But what other option do some of these people have but to hope things will change?
We need to get out of our bubbles if we want to win going forward because this is not going to get better. Democrats have put fourth some solutions but they're so terrible at getting the message out. Plus they're going against those on the right who are misinformed or misinform. We have to be louder like they are. We have to be grounded in principle and not cave in. There's more of us than there are of them but our people don't turn out to vote or they get complacent.

The idea that a Health Savings Account is a viable alternative to Obamacare is astonishing to me....most Americans don't even have money to save so how do Republicans think that this is a plan that will help those 20+ million who loose their insurance

That's what I'll always remember about this result. Empathy is not a natural human psychological development. In reality, if you never face oppression at any point in your life, you're much less likely to have it. Love for your neighbors, the kindness of strangers, all fairytales on the same level as The Lion King.

Oh don't worry, there will be massive backlash against this type of policy. People going on about getting rid of Obamacare will realize their mistake eventually.
When the stories of millions of people losing health insurance comes out, maybe the uninformed dumbasses will finally wake up. I don't have much hope for it though.

A lot of political commentary is focusing on an extreme rejection of the culture of political correctness.
I've seen SO many comments from Trump supporters on Facebook saying things like, 'Shut up. That is over. REAL America is back.'
e.g. on the article I just read:

Looking at Senate races with less than 100,000 difference in more populated states, the Libertarian candidates got a good chunk. Jason

Meanwhile, a person who spoke to the Trump campaign told POLITICO that the aides have also discussed tapping Sarah Palin for Interior secretary. Trump has said he’d like to put Palin in his cabinet, and Palin has made no secret of her interest.

The Dems (in my mind) have three options for 2020:
- White, quite likable Christian male who will slow down on gun control and run on a more 2004 Kerry platform. Jason Kander would have done this quite well (okay he was for gun reform, but still)
- A minority candidate who speaks to people who are disenfranchised and gives them genuine belief (it should never be the case that a minority candidate is ''used'' just to get the voters out...but Obama did.. But, it clearly helps) - Cory Booker? Castro?
- The Sanders candidate. - Warren, I guess.
I guess it just depends what direction the Dems want to go now.

No one can say this with a straight face especially when blacks have been the most loyal/reliable part of the Democratic party for decades now.
Blame Hispanics who gave him more votes than Mitt Romney despite him genuinely hating their guts.
