It comes down to the Electoral College - which is in fact based on population but on a winner take all basis... So if someone wins the election by winning lots of states really closely but lost others in a massive blowout then a popular vote mismatch is possible
Hillary needs to snatch Pennsylvania for sure. Then if she gets North Carolina and Florida, it's game over for Trump. Like. Literally, he won't be able to win.
