Bernie's ideas were a lot more liberal than Hillary's, but they still agreed on a lot of core principles. If you look at their voting records as senators, you'll see that they agreed on over 90% of the issues.
Most of their disagreements are based on how far you want to take things. Bernie wants to legalize marijuana entirely. Hillary wants to reclassify it. Bernie wants to raise minimum wages to $15/hour (I think; it's something high like that). Hillary wants a federal minimum wage of $12/hour (again, could be wrong) and to encourage states to raise it higher if they see fit. Stuff like that.
I think Bernie lost because America as a whole isn't as liberal as he is. Millenials supported him because they're a lot more liberal, but older democrats had their reservations.
