She reported to a court last year that he never struck her. I honestly think she said that to protect him because they're on good terms with each other.
However, too many reliable sources from friends of theirs in the 80s claimed that there was abuse. Even in her brother's book, he talks about how she would go running to him to get away from Sean when he was getting violent after drinking. Her brother had to protect her while Sean was banging on the door and screaming names at her.

Most recently, even Sandra Bernhard, who would have been Madonna's best girlfriend and possibly her number one confidant at the time of the alleged abuse, kind of reacted somewhat unusually to a question she was asked about last year's court filing. Seemed to me Sandra was holding back, as if she felt disappointed in some way, even though so much time has passed since the two women were ever actually friends. I thought that was significant.
No matter what, Madonna filed charges with the Malibu sheriff's station in late 1988. That's just a fact, even if she later withdrew her complaint (and swiftly filed for a divorce instead―again, significant).
Sean and Madonna will always be a classic couple, and some part of me is always excited to see them together, but I hope and believe that beautiful M's great love could still be on his way. She deserves the best!
