My bad. Let me correct myself: a certain insecure, petty Ayu stan started this mess.

Ironic how he was saying Namie "will never be #1" when Namie statistically has the most #1s.

Jesus Christ can you guys please accept that Ayu is an act of nostalgia nowadays? jesus ****ing christ. I get tired of being her fan and being threw in the same bag of fans that still think that she's something relevant for japanese music these days. stop embarrassing us, even if we're not so much
ps: A BEST was discounted last year

This thread is absolutely tragic.

As for Kumi Koda, lol you tried (and failed) even harder. Kumi was relevant for like only five years. Unlike Ayumi, she didn't last long enough to be even qualified as a nostalgia act.

You would know a lot about acts who can be called nostalgia acts at best.

People need to stop living in denial. Utada destroyed your faves and Fantome is more successful than any other female album since 2010. Accept the facts and move on.

Fantome has not yet outsold Uncontrolled. Besides, next year is Namie's 25th anniversary & she is gunning up an Uncontrolled-sized album/Best Fiction-sized GH. So wait & see.

Fantome is going to be the #3 best selling album of the year overall. Uncontrolled didn't even make the Top 10 yearly chart and that was with huge hits (one of her biggest ever - Love Story), more promotion than Fantome, and her 20th anniversary celebrations with a huge dome tour. If Namie failed to reach the Top 10 yearly charts with her 20th anniversary when she was more popular overall, I don't see why we should expect her 25th anniversary album to do any better when Hero, Dear Diary, or Mint are nowhere near as big as Love Story.
Of course, she may prove me wrong but based on the data I'm not inclined to believe she will at this point.

What kind of irrelevant argument? By your logic,FEEL has no big hit & was the #6 best selling album of the year. So FEEL is bigger than Uncontrolled? idgi.

Fantome is still selling extremely well and will outsell Uncontrolled in a few weeks. The yearly charts were just one aspect of it. Even just looking at sales Fantome will outsell Uncontrolled and perhaps even Past<Future so it doesn't matter.
If Fantome is going to end up outselling Namie's 20th anniversary album with bigger hits and when Namie's overall popularity was higher, why should we expect Namie's 25th anniversary album to do better when Namie has declined since 2012 and the singles aren't nearly as big as before?

I can't believe I fell to this instigation of the fans of certain artists who are clear losers here trying to pit two actually successful women againts each other.
PS. 45m of Kana's sales are 0.5 - 1.29$ singles.

People saying that Namie never flopped Have you been listening to JPop for... 2 years? Namie had one of the biggest downfalls of Jpop. She went from selling 2 million copies of Concentration 20 to sell 800.000 of Genius 2000 and 300.000 of break the rules. She also went from having massive single sales like CAN YOU CELEBRATE? selling more than two millions to selling not even 300.000 copies of her singles only two years after. She did an amazing reinvention and in 2008 she reallly slayed, but then AKB48 and the idols came so she was quickly overshadowed. For a female solo artist she's doing amazing, but don't make it look like from 1998 to 2008 she was nowhere to be seen. Besides, the sales on the 2000s were still amazing in Japan, which saves her sales a little bit

Namie has released singles and albums every year over the last 24 years + she is always touring. Utada was away from the scene for what? 5 or 6 years? Obviously her album would sell a lot. Let's see how much Utada is going to sell after 10 years of constantly releasing singles and albums like Namie. A pop artist can't stay on top forever especially not in a country like Japan. But she is still doing well. Her Genic album sold 250k, her singles are always Top 10 hits. Namie had two peaks, she is 24 years in the game, she achieved a lot, she is a legend and there is no reason to pit these two women against each other. Both have their receipts, both are talented and we all should be happy that these two women slay in a time where idol groups dominate Japan.
As a Namie stan I'm very happy for Hikaru

Amazing post I love both Namie and Utada though both disappointed me with the latest albums. Utada's success after such a long period of hiatus could be career-killing (like in case with Ai Otsuka) and a lot of other things like marrying an Italian could've impacted the release negatively but she has exceeded all the expectations, Her comeback should be celebrated but it's a real shame that some petty people are using Utada (who they don't even like that much to begin with, you don't need to go further than the first page of their post history) to release their pent up anger and spoil the moment. We all should unite to fight the real evil.

If you stan for J-pop you CAN'T use tired "utada releases less often so of course each album sells more" excuses. The industry moves really fast and that's what it's built for. Breaks in between albums have almost always meant downfall for artists. Yes, Utada had comeback hype, but she had hype BECAUSE she is powerful. Utada is an exception, not the rule.
This is directed at Suilen too.
