If Gaga continued down the Meat Dress route, she would have alienated much of her casual fans and completely turned off the general public, much like Bjork. She would not have collaborated with Tony Bennet, not have sung at the the Oscars, and would not be performing at this year's Super Bowl. She would be much more irrelevant than she is now.

Just to be a bit of a stan up in here... Björk has sung at the Oscars (with her own Oscar-nominated song), wrote/performed for the 2004 Olympics opening ceremony, recently had an
admittedly mediocre MoMA retrospective, won the highest honors at Cannes, won the Polar Music Prize, among many other huge accomplishments
She's certainly going to be regarded as an influential, legendary musician when it's all said and done, regardless of her lack of commercial success past the early/mid 90s... and she did that by following her muse regardless of where it took her. Even among her core fanbase, many people don't like certain Björk eras.
Perhaps Joanne will be amazing, I'm not sure yet. But Gaga's recent interviews do make me feel like she's targeting a new audience for potential sales, not just for her own artistic purposes. I don't love that idea.
