If the music is on point, no one will be distracted by a lobster. Obviously Gaga and Björk are very, very different artists, but it's still a decent comparison. Björk's eccentricity turns casual fans off, but it certainly doesn't distract from her music.

I think she was joking. Her tone with the interviewer actually seemed like she wasn't very interested in what the interviewer was saying either.

But I do think for Gaga, the outfits and the fiasco behind her visuals did overshadow her music. It DID turn people off, and it's one of the reasons she's trying to play catch up and be seen as relatable. I mean the mere moment she shedded the outfits and sang her heart out for C2C, The oscars, and the national anthem the public's interest increased. The self deprecating humor is something she's always done.

I get what you mean to an extent, but ARTPOP was frankly not a great album. It wouldn't have mattered what she wore or what music videos she released during that era.

Sure, her costumes and "gimmicks" might have turned people off, but ultimately what turned people off was singing about her fans clapping for her (no hate, I still like that song), doing a Donatella tribute song with a recycled beat, etc.

I do agree with this, but Bjork *only* appeals to a very small specific audience and doesn't actually consider herself a pop-star. Also, Bjork's album sales are a minute fraction of Gaga's within the past few years, and has similar WW total sales despite being in the industry for over 20 years and being popular at a time when people only bought physical CDs.

If Gaga continued down the Meat Dress route, she would have alienated much of her casual fans and completely turned off the general public, much like Bjork. She would not have collaborated with Tony Bennet, not have sung at the the Oscars, and would not be performing at this year's Super Bowl. She would be much more irrelevant than she is now.
