Having a crossover hit like this in the '90s was almost unheard of. I wish I were older when this song came out so I could know just how much it slayed.

It wasn't. It was more of a "Finally, who was he fooling" type of reaction when he came out.
Ricky Martin had a part in an early video where he was in the shower with 3 or 4 girls... and a muscled mostly naked man. That's when I knew he was gay.
Same here. I used to have a screensaver of him shirtless with living la vida loca playing. How my parents didn't realize I was gay then is something that still mystifies me.
