I would skip both and do scripted sit down interviews to try to give reasonable explanations. It's not like the 1st debate had any real substance anyways.

His supporters say things like: "Trump that bitch!". They won't be happy with him if he retreats. And he needs them to rebuild whatever business he wants to pursue after this because smart, educated, well off people are staying away from his hotels and golf courses. The last thing he can afford right now is disappointing his cult.
