What a dumb comment
Other TV networks don't go black when the Super Bowl starts. They air things for the minority of people who aren't interested in football.
The whole trend of booking pop stars for the Super Bowl started when the network airing it lost a HUGE chunk of ratings to an In Living Color special on another network during halftime.
And the halftime isn't what people watch the Super Bowl for, so they have to get someone who will keep the ratings going during that break.
