At a certain point, what's "hot" in the media becomes personal for someone in such a position. I can guarantee that many black people didn't "care" about black men getting gunned down before Trayvon Martin trial passed.
Once it starts sinking in the fact that it could be you or someone you know, you can either sit on your hands because you didn't "care" before, or you can go out and do something about it, like so many have. Hence BLM starting now and not in 1990 whatever.
