The GP will say Nirvana so for me this is the end of this conversation.

The Nevermind album cover alone is more recognizable than any Mariah album cover
I would put Tupac above Mariah too.

Well let us know who they influenced bc i'm sure it wasn't more than artists like Mariah, Whitney, Dr. Dre, Biggie or Tupac

just Kurdt himself has influenced so many things idk where to begin
from music, to books, to fashion, to art
the fact that Mariah is being listed when she was basically Whitney 2.0

There was no one like Nirvana before them, they truly influenced the next generation of rock music. If that's pretentious, than so be it!

Some of the Nirvana influenced bands:

Foo Fighters
Rise Against
Green Day
Blink 182
3 Days Grace
Linkin Park
Evanescence
Seether
Stone Temple Pilots
Imagine Dragons
Alice in Chains
Hole
30 Seconds to Mars
Bush
White Stripes
Muse
Breaking Benjamin
3 Doors Down
One Republic, The Fray, Daughtry, Avril Lavigne, Young the Giant and The 1975.

"“Holy Grail” by Jay-Z featuring Justin Timberlake– In perhaps one of the strangest Cobain references in music, Jay-Z decided to flip the lyrics of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on the title track of his last album, both paying homage to Cobain, but also questioning the current state of the music industry."

"1. “Creep” by Radiohead– Radiohead is one of the many bands who drew inspiration from early Nirvana tracks. The song “Negative Creep” off of Nirvana’s Bleach album has been referenced by numerous groups over the years, but most notably can be found in Radiohead’s “Creep.”"

----------------------------------------------
This list may not be as long as Mariah's but they are two different genres after all.

"In the early '90s, there wasn’t a hip hop band that included Nirvana’s lyrics in their work," Cross explains. "That’s happened in the last few years. There have been 55 different bands so far that are listed on Whosampled.com that have covered Nirvana songs. That’s pretty extraordinary."

Halsey is featured on the #1 song in the world right now, she's an example of this generation. She literally name dropped Nirvana in the chorus of her own song. To say that they are "forgotten" and have no influence is just ignorant

She also mentioned "Biggie" as well. Just a thought.

(I'm not disagreeing with you, just trying to say they weren't unparalleled in terms of success). The Chainsmokers, the other half of the #1, have a song called Kanye, (about Kanye west) who no doubt also drew inspiration from the huge rap wave of the 90s.

 #fact
anyone saying Nirvana is forgotten or doesnt influence music nowadays just doesnt understand the influence theyve had & how it has trickled down over the years
for not having a new album in over 20 years id say they have stood the test of time

I totally agree with you! I would argue that Nirvana, Tupac, Biggie, even Wu Tang are all bigger artists than Mariah in the 90s. All of the people yelling Mariah Carey have to remember that Mimi differentiated herself from Céline/Whitney/Adult Contemporary by working with rappers. Mariah was very influenced by rap music.

Read your own replies in this thread - everyone can see your pretentiousness.

The title said "biggest act" and the op also mentioned "most successful" so of course, most people are going to use the commercial success as the default barometer. Yet you were putting them down for only knowing about sales and assuming that they only listened to pop.

Kurt Cobain even admitted to ripping off some other groups But an innovator, I guess

You could go as far as to say that Nirvana is the biggest and most impactful act of the last 25 years.

It is ridiculous. They changed music and influenced so many bands, helped create/created alternative, grunge, emo genres... With Unplugged many thought they would go for a more stripped back, folk-y sound on their next album. Unfortunately that never happened due to obvious reasons, but its fun to imagine how they could have shifted the music scene once again..

Go to your local Target, Walmart, JCPenney, whatever. There will be Nirvana merch and t-shirts. You see any Mariah or Britney or Whitney ****? Goodbye... Nirvana has become a SYMBOL for kids who don't fit in, rebellion, moody teens, etc. They will forever be iconic because these teenagers will always exist. New teens discover Nirvana every day and will continue to do so for decades.

Mariah is most definitely the biggest artist to arise from the 90s.
